President Zoran Milanovic,
Were I confident that this letter would not end up in a wastepaper basket in your office then this letter would not be an Open Letter, but sadly my confidence is justifiably shaky. Were the matters I will address in this letter not matters that are of utmost importance for Croatia and its people in the 21st century then this letter would not be written.
I am writing to you to add to the public awareness that you, as President, must do everything in your power to ensure that the values, the victims and the meaning for Croatia and its people of the 1990’s Homeland War receive the full respect they deserve. After all, that is one of the most important roles of the President of the Republic of Croatia under its Constitution! When you do not do what you should be doing then you have no place to sit in the Office of the President; the highest office in the land representing Croatia and all it stands for, so to speak.
Article 94 of the Constitution of the Republic of Croatia includes the clause that says: “The President of the Republic of Croatia shall be responsible for the defence of the independence and territorial integrity of the Republic of Croatia.” Adding from the Historical Foundations of the Republic of Croatia in the Constitution of the Republic of Croatia that Croatia’s foundations lie “in the new Constitution of the Republic of Croatia (1990) and the victory of the Croatian nation and Croatia’s defenders in the just, legitimate and defensive war of liberation, the Homeland War (1991-1995), wherein the Croatian nation demonstrated its resolve and readiness to establish and preserve the Republic of Croatia as an independent and autonomous, sovereign and democratic state,” it follows that the President of the Republic of Croatia must act and show morally, politically and in every way adherence to and promotion of the values of the Homeland War and must not compromise them in any way for, such compromise jeopardises independence. Otherwise, if the president does not act in accordance with set principles and expectations, he or she has no place sitting in that office and if the appropriate authorities do nothing to impeach him or her from the Office when he or she has breached his or her duties as President then the people must act towards that goal. After all, the people directly elect their President in Croatia!
The Homeland War and those who lost their lives so that Croatia may be free and independent, so that it can carve its own future in a democracy, far removed from communist Yugoslavia heritage, cannot and must not be bullied, ridiculed, insulted, belittled, threatened or intimidated! And you do and have done that exactly that! Accordingly, you have in mine and many other eyes committed treason; betrayed the modern Croatian nation!
It is, of course, your latest public statements at Jasenovac on 22 April 2020 when you, regarding the plaque dedicated to 11 Croatian Homeland War of Independence defenders from HOS unit, which fought under the slogan “For Homeland Ready”, said that “the plaque should be moved to somewhere else, thrown away…it has no relevance to the Homeland War… Those who fought in 1991, thought they were fighting under the salute For Homeland Ready (Za dom spemni), did not fight only for the Croatian state but for the restoration of the 1941 Croatian state,” shined a spotlight on your incompetence and your despise for the Croatian state, you are supposed to protect and uphold.
These statements of yours unequivocally demonstrate that you disregard and betray purposefully the fact that almost 94% of Croatian voters (among which you evidently were not) voted in May 1991 for independence and that this fact and national resolve gave the mandate and legitimacy to those fighters and defenders who fought under whatever slogan and salute reinforced their loyalty and self-sacrifice to independence they were defending, fighting for. This May 1991 referendum had nothing to do with NDH and everything to do with the long-standing oppression at the hands of the Yugoslav communist regime.
You, President, should be ashamed of yourself and the Croatian people must have no other alternative but to remove you from the position they recently elected you for! I am quite certain you will not willingly resign from it all by your own self.
Your denial of the legitimacy Croatia’s Homeland War defenders, including those fighting under the slogan “For Homeland Ready” has turned into deception and lies — lies to a nation of frightened people. For it has, due to statements like yours, become increasingly scary to express pride in the independence of Croatia and its war veterans, leading to a generalised fear of being labelled as some unwanted extremist because of one’s expressed pursuit of joy and pride for what Croatia had achieved via its war of defence against Serb-led aggression!
Why do you need to prostitute the way you do the outcome of the 1991 vote for independence by almost 94% of Croatian voters? What drives you, President Milanovic? Hatred for the independence of Croatia? Contempt for the independence of Croatia? What!?
You were a professed Communist before you saw possibilities for personal advancement within the League of Communists of Croatia Party/ Social Democratic Party that would set itself up to benefit personally from the blood lost from those whose names are written on that HOS plaque in Jasenovac and thousands of others fighting for and defending today’s independent state of Croatia. I’m not writing about your obvious infatuation with the dictatorship of Josip Broz Tito. It’s obvious that you salivate over the thought of you being able to exercise the same unbridled power when it comes to degrading the will of the Croatian people for independence and secession from Yugoslavia.
But, President Milanovic, the buck does stop at your door; therefore, “you’re fired.”
Will the “shipping clerks” (the people) please come forward!

I don’t keep up with Croatian politics because I have better things to do, BUT I am a firm believer that the past must stay in the past and that the only way forward is without the baggage of the past. Ina, I admire your courage and your passion for believing in what you do, I think that is what counts. If there were more people like you, I know that Croatia would become a better place. I have lived in diaspora for 46 years and returning to Croatia in 2004 sent shockwaves to my way of life and even 15 years later I still struggle with understanding why this country is not one of the richest in Europe. We all need to be fighters and speak out, but I think Croatians are tired of fighting and struggling and that is the weakness these politicians are using to move their agenda forward. Good job!
So true Ines. The only past Croatia needs to uphold is the actual secession from communism and move forward with democracy. Sick and tired of leaders bringing up WWII as if it never ended, and indeed it never ended for those who will not own up and take responsibility for terrible crimes. Stuck is Croatia on this, a whole lot of politicians who live on spin and media grabs! And people suffer in the meantime! Hard to watch this without at least trying to influence good changes. Lijepo i čvrsto napisano. No to bi bilo dostatno za pola kritike prema predsjedniku Milanoviću. Dobro bi bilo da u drugu polovicu kritike napisete o pasivnosti (i otpuštanju) predsjednika prema svom narodu glede 8.5.1945.danu oslobadjanja Hrvatske od nacizma i fašizma i uz to o pobjedi moderne Hrvatske države nad ( nacističkom) NDH 41-45 zatim pobjedi moderne države Hrvatske nad (komunističkom) Hrvatskom 45-90. Vjerujem da ste pročitali govor predsjednika SRNJ Franka – Waltera Steinmeiera od 8.5.2020. o oslobodjenju Njemačke od nacizma 8.5.45 i pobjedi moderne Njemačke nad nacističkom Njemačkom. Govor nije vremenski obiman no vrijedan je za pročitati.

Nicely and firmly written. But that would be enough for half the criticism of President Milanovic. It would be good to write in the second half of the critique about the passivity (and dismissal) of the president towards his people regarding May 8, 1945, the day of Croatia’s liberation from Nazism and fascism, and the victory of the modern Croatian state over the (Nazi) NDH 41-45. of the state of Croatia over (communist) Croatia 45-90. I believe you have read the speech of the President of the Federal People’s Republic of Germany, Frank – Walter Steinmeier, on 8 May 2020. on the liberation of Germany from Nazism 8.5.45 and the victory of modern Germany over Nazi Germany. The speech is not time consuming but it is worth reading.

Vlado Žarek Hrvatski predsjednik danas bi morao govoriti o oslobođenju Hrvatske od komunizma 1990-tih možda na 5. kolovoza! 1945. Hrvatska nije bila oslobođena – ona je ostala u Jugoslaviji i nakon 1945 samo su nikle masovne grobnice hrvatskih žrtava po Hrvatskoj i Sloveniji itd! Komunisti su 1990-tih sebe ubacili u Ustav RH kao jedan od temelja neovisne Hrvatske samo zato da bi i dalje mogli raditi štetu pojmu i realnosti stvarne neovisnosti! Njemačka se nije borila za neovisnost 1990-tih pa govor njezinog predsjednika glede svibnja 1945 je stvar povijesti. Njemačka Drugog svjetskog rata se ne može uspoređivati u kontekstu neovisnosti sa Hrvatskom u DRugom svjetskom ratu; Njemaćka se želila širiti po Europi, a Hrvatska je samo željela svoju vlastitu neovisnost! Vlado Žarek Today, the Croatian president should talk about the liberation of Croatia from communism in the 1990s, maybe on August 5! In 1945, Croatia was not liberated – it remained in Yugoslavia and after 1945, only mass graves of Croatian victims sprang up in Croatia and Slovenia, etc! In the 1990s, the Communists incorporated themselves into the Constitution of the Republic of Croatia as one of the foundations of an independent Croatia only so that they could continue to do damage to the notion and reality of real independence! Germany did not fight for independence in the 1990s, so its president’s speech on May 1945 is a matter of history. World War II Germany cannot be compared in the context of independence with Croatia in World War II; Germany wanted to expand across Europe, and Croatia just wanted its own independence! Ja sam svojim Rodom iz Ravnog u Popovu, gdje je u listopadu 91 počeo Domovinski rat u BiH. Vi ste koliko pročitah s Korčule i sunčevom sjenom mogli smo se dotaknuti. Moj pokojni otac bio je u službi NDH u Dubrovniku do pada Italije 43. Uz to radio je za tajnu policiju NDH. Moj jedan stric odležao je 8 god zatvora od 48-56 god u Mostaru poradi sluzbe u NDH. Drugi stric bio je domobran u trajanju NDH. Kao djeca do pada Rankovića otpatili smo u Jugoslaviji kao Isius Krist. 92 proveo sam 227 dana u srpskom logoru u BiH.
Upoznat sam do detalja sa državnosti Hrvatske koja u svojoj povijesti ima tri početka 41-45 45-90 i 90 do danas. Tri državnosti potpunih suprotnosti a isti ja Hrvat. Vi niste povjesničar kao ni ja no ja sam na izvoru dogadjanja a vi u povjesnim papirima i za svog života nećete skupiti sve papire nego samo one za koje se odlučite. Prva država Hrvata NDH pod patronatom TREĆEG RAJHA
Druga država Hrvata FEDERALNA HRVATSKA pod patronatom komunističke Yogoslavije
Treća država Hrvata RH od 90 i dalje
Sve prije prve države Hrvata bio je vazalski odnos uključivo i Kraljevinu Jugoslaviju
Hrvati su po prvi put ušli u istinsku borbu za svoju državnost 41 , podjelili su se na :
Opredjeljene za Hrvatsku državu u sastavu nacističke Njemačke Opredjeljene za Hrvatsku državu u borbi protiv Nacističke Njemačke i Fašističke Italije , Hrvatski partizani ili NOP Hrvatske zaključno sa ZAVNOH
Na moju žalost 45 god Srpski partizani napravili su što su napravili od Dunava do Blajburga gdje je ostalo 8 mojih Žaraka.
Hrvatski partizani i ZAVNOH i njihovi nesimpatizeri dobili su Federalnu Hrvatsku u sastavu DFJ. Hrvati : opredjeljeni za ZAVNOH ponijeli su petokraku a opredjeljeni za NDH ponijeli su ZDS a srpski partizani i četnici u Hrvatskoj ponijeli su kokardu. Komunistička YU prisilno drži nekakvu ravnotezu unutar feferalne Hrvatske.
Vaše pisanje je:
U Hrvatskoj državi danas netrbaju Hrvati opredjeljeni za ZAVNOH nego samo opredjeljeni za ZDS a srpski partizani i četnici s kokardom su poraženi i otisli i Bogu fala.

Tudjman odmah 91 postavio sve na svoje mjesto. Razmontirao je postrojbe sa znakom ZDS i sve stavio po jedno Zapovjedništvo.
O tome draga Ina Vukić Vi trebate pisti. To je potrebno Hrvatskom narodu. Ono što Vi propagirate svojim pisanjem jeste imidž osvete Hrvats nad Hrvatom. ZDS II svj. rata i ZDS 91 jeste jedan te isti. I danas on moze biti samo uspomena na zlo vrijeme.
Pišite : Predsjednik dr. Tudjman je postavio stvari na svoje mjesto 91 i to nemjenjajte. To je imidž.

Imidž osvete Hrvata nad Hrvatom Vladislav Žarak ja ne propagira. Nažalost to je bila istina u Jugoslaviji nakon 1945. gdje su se Hrvati komunisti osvećivali Hrvatima nekomunistima. Nemojte vi tvrditi kako ni jedan partizan Hrvat nije dignuo ruku ili metak na Hrvata kad je istina sasvim suprotna. A ja propagiram pravdu za žrtve komunističkih zločina i oni opredjeljeni za ZAVNOH su itekako se iživljavali nad Hrvatima koji su bili Za dom spremni, za neovisnost Hrvatske. Bilo ih je bilo ih je mnogo, a ne malo kako to vi tvrdite. Postrojbe HOS sa Za dom spremni zakonito postojali i njihovo znakovlje je hrvatski sud proglasio zakonitim čak i nedavno kada je bilo spora opko tog pozdrava. I to je ono najbitnije što predsjednik mora poštivati. Nema veze koliko ih je bilo ali u ono vrijeme Domovinskog rata svaki čovjek i svaka žena spremni za obranu Hrvatsku vrijedili su mnogo mnogo mnogo

The Yugoslavian wars were wars between brothers. And the president is eight about his critics against Ustasha greetings. Ethnical clean areas were the goal of politicians in Belgrade, Sarajevo and Zagreb.
Bosnian, Croatian and Serbian ethnical groups are defined by religion. Same language, same love for sports, same culture,… there is more that unites then seperates.
The nationalists of all sides still believe they fought a defending war, but all they fought was a war against their own civil population that suffered on all sides.
I am glad that this time slowly passes and Croats can go to Belgrade and Serbs to the sea in croatia.
Bratsvo, you seem to pursue the wrong wrong wrong foundation here. It was not a civil war, brother did not fight brother, it was Serb aggression against others. The UN Internationalk Tribuynal in the Hague even declared that it was not a civil war and hence was able to pursue with cases before it. You are aware that Yugoslavia was created from different states after WWI as Kingdom presided upon by Serb Monarchy, then that didn’t work due to Monarchy’s awful dictatorship over Croats in particular and Kingdom was no more as WWII broke out. Then communists started fighting to keep Yugoslavia etc etc. The President is purposefully calling the greeting as Ustashe for his own warped reasons, much to do with avoiding condemnation of communist crimes. That greeting originated centuries ago among Croats and yes it was used also i WWII when Croatia fought for independence, to get away from Yugoslavia! I have no time for a president who spreads such evil innuendo about Croatia’s veterans who fought in 1990’s war to defend Croatia and neither do many Croats.
From my point of view the creation of Yugoslavia started already with the pan slavic movement in the 19th century.
First it was a serbian dominated one, as it was not build on equality but the kingdom of Serbia got croatia through beeing on the winning side of world war 1. Otherwise Croatia would have stayed part of the Habsburg Empire if Germany and Austria would have won the war.
As there is beside religion not much difference between Bosnians, Croats and Serbs it was a war based on religious groups. I see it as a war of brothers, you can ask many families that were partially catholics, orthodox or muslim. To pick out one famous example take Siniša Mihajlović one parent croat the other serbian. His croatian uncle got caught by serbs. This example stands for countless families in the region. Neighbours that lived peacefully door to door started to hate each other because of nationalistic propaganda from all sides.
The president got elected and as the left oriented people had to accept the nationalistic rule of Tudjman, now the right once must accept Milanovic.
The german anthem got also prohibited the first part as it was used during national socialism also it existed before. So there is nothing wrong to prohibit the slogan that was missused by Ustasha or other symbols they used.
Speaking for me and my family, we can travel freely through ex Yugoslavia without having any issues because we are from this or that republic. And we do not even need a translator to communicate in 4 so called languages as this languages are created artificially out of dialects.
Regarding Hague it by some on one day loved and on the other day hated, depending on their judgement. If a croat is sentenced guilty croatia complains, if a serb is sentenced guilty serbia complains. I think, nobody there was innocent and far to less from all sides got there. Everybody that supported the war should be send there.
Bratsvo – YOU ARE TERRIBlY WRONG HERE:
1. Croatian Parliament in 1919 NEVER RATIFIED the joining into the Kingdopm of Serbs, Croats and Slovenes and Croatian people were hoodwinked into it by a handful of its crooked personalities
2. There is a GREAT DEAL MORE BESIDES RELIGION difference between Bosnians, Croats and Serbs so please so stop this. The most important difference is entailed in prevalent moral codes of the people/nation and their ambitions to expand over other nations’ territory. People did not hate each other what was hated was the Greater Serbian expansion politics even at the cost of genocide. There were Serbs fighting against Serbs on Croatian defence side etc.
3. Tudjman WAS NOT NATIONALISTIC he was SOVEREIGNIST. He worked for all Croats regardless of their political past etc. His were politics of historic reconciliation.
4. There IS MUCH WRONG IN MILANOVIC’S prohibition of Slogan that ONLY HE AND HIS COMMUNISTS CALL IT USTASHE SLOGAN, Normal people see it as centturies old slogan for Croatian independence readiness in war and peace. Milanovic was elected by barely 25% of entire voting population and I for one do not see that as being elected by the people but as a lucky break for someone who moved not a finger for Croatian independence and in fact deserted Croatia when it most needed him at time of Serb aggression in 1990’s.
5. It is ABSOLOTELY INDICATIVE OF WHERE YOU ARE COMING FROM IN THESE COMMENTS AND SAY “that everybody that supported the war should be sent to Hague”! It does not factor with you at all that the only truth is and was is that SERBS BRUTALLY ATTACKED CROATS AND CROATS HAD NO CHOICE BUT TO DEFEND THEIR LIVES and self-preservation. That was a was of aggression. Serbia and Montenegro simply did not accept that almost 94% of Croatian voters voted in 1991 to secede from communist Yugoslavia and President Milanovic carry’s their candle to this day! Simply awful for any nation!

Bio je 13. dan mjeseca svibnja, godina 1981., blagdan Gospe Fatimske.
Ivan Pavao II. blagoslivljao je vjernike na Trgu svetoga Petra u Vatikanu. Osmijeh i blagoslov vjernicima, poljubac jednoj djevojčici… U 17 sati i 17 minuta profesionalni ubojica Muhamed Ali Agca ispalio je četiri metka u Svetog Oca. Operacija u klinici Gemelli trajala je 5 sati i 20 minuta. Bdjeli su visoki crkveni dužnosnici, bdjeli su i političari a bdjela je i Crkva, ujedinjena u molitvi za svoga poglavara. Papa Wojtyla kasnije je izjavio da se osjeća dužnikom svih onih koji su ga tih dana ‘svojom molitvom vratili u život’.

Rendgenska snimka pokazala je čudesnu putanju zrna što je začudilo i liječnike. Metak, ispaljen s udaljenosti od samo nekoliko metara, nije bio smrtonosan. Prošao je uz vitalne organe i napravio čudnu krivulju. “Možda je ubojica i ciljao dobro, no Netko je bdio nad Papinim životom.”, zapisao je kasnije mons. Dziwisz. Netko je želio ugasiti život ‘biskupa obučenog u bijelo, Papu koji je došao izdaleka’. Tko? Papa je, kažu, to saznao od samog atentatora, ali je tajnu ponio sa sobom u grob.

Nakon oporavka, Ivan Pavao II. početkom lipnja izlazi iz klinike Gemelli, no u nju se ponovno vraća krajem mjeseca. A 14. kolovoza ujutro, nakon molitve i klanjanja, govori bolesnicima u bolnici, oprašta se s liječnicima i medicinskom službom. Vraća se u Vatikan gdje posjećuje grob apostolskog prvaka. “Posjetio sam sv. Petra da mu zahvalim što me je ostavio na životu. Posjetio sam i grobove Pavla VI. i Ivana Pavla I. jer je uz njih mogao stajati i treći grob“, pojasnio je kardinalima i djelatnicima kurije.
U listopadu iste godine na Trgu Sv.Petra papa Wojtyla izjavljuje kako je, preživjevši atentat, postao dužnikom Presvete Djevice i Svetih zaštitnika. “U svemu što mi se toga dana dogodilo osjetio sam neobičnu majčinsku brigu i zaštitu koja se pokazala jačom od smrtonosnog metka.“
Tri relikvije i danas podsjećaju na događaj koji je potresao svijet; Papin pojas probušen metkom u svetištu u Jasnoj Gori, metak koji je postao zavjetni dar učvršćen u kruni Majke Božje Fatimske te krvava reverenda koja je izložena u krakovskom svetištu ‘Ne bojte se’.

Prva scena: Anđeo s ognjenim mačem, koji izgleda kao da će spaliti svijet. Snažnim glasom je kliktao: “Pokora, pokora, pokora!” Plamenovi su se gasili u dodiru sa svjetlošću iz Marijine ruke. Svijetu prijeti kazna ako ne čini pokoru i ne časti Isusa i Mariju.
Druga scena: Progon Crkve, pape, biskupa, redovnika, redovnica, muškaraca i žena – ubijeni su od skupine vojnika koji su koristili vatreno oružje.
Treća scena: Veliki povratak ljudi Bogu. Dva anđela imaju posude u kojima sabiru krv mučenika te njome škrope duše koje se približavaju Bogu. Slijedi proslava i trijumf Marijinog Prečistog Srca.

As WWII ended 200,000 Croatian disarmed soldiers and 500,000 civilians (men, women, children) left Croatia seeking refuge from the West only to be sent back from the Bleiburg field in Austria by the British, who held command over that part of Europe, to communist Yugoslavia headed by one of the top ten mass murderers of the 20th century / Josip Broz Tito. They were sent to certain death. What followed were mass murders of these and other Croats who rejected communism, who rejected Yugoslavia, who wanted an independent Croatia. Almost 1,000 mass graves of victims of communist Yugoslavia crimes have been unearthed since 1990 in Croatia, that is, since Croatia embarked on its battle to secede from communist Yugoslavia and finally succeeded in 1995/1998. Almost 600 mass graves in Slovenia… Communist regime of former Yugoslavia and its operatives to this day evade justice. Its multitudes of victims, cruelly murdered, thrown alive or dead into pits, mountains of skulls and bones still remain in those pits. A new mass grave is discovered every few weeks. Victims of communist crimes still have no justice, the justice that is inherent to humanity and its tireless pursuits to achieve and retain the privilege of being called human.
