Croatia: Die-Hard Communists Keep Distorting History, Denial of Communist Crimes Must be Criminalised

After the Cold War, after the Berlin Wall crumbled in 1989, a new constellation of actors entered transnational European assemblies, organisations, and parliament. The newcomers’ interpretation of European history, which was based on the equivalence of the two ‘totalitarianisms’, Communism and Nazism – because they were subjected to both regimes and lived both at one time or another since World War Two began – directly challenged the prevailing Western European narrative, with no experience of living under a communist regime, that was constructed (by WWII victors including communist Stalin who had much horror to hide, i.e., Allies) on the uniqueness of the Holocaust as the epitome of evil. Regardless of such prevailing muscle that ripped away attention from perhaps worst crimes than the Holocaust was, communist crimes, if numbers of victims is any measure, the Nazi/Communist “Double Genocide” debate gained in significant momentum and speed for the past two decades, at least, and more vigorously so since 2010. The latter trajectory was prompted by a movement in Europe that believed and believes the crimes—morally, ethically—of Nazism and Communism are equal, and that those who don’t think they’re absolutely equal, are soft on Communism and condone its coverup of genocide while practicing double standards for justice to victims; all victims are not victims to them, just the ones who suffered by the hand pf their political opponents.

Indeed, in late 2010 the European Commission had rejected calls from Eastern Europe to introduce a so-called double genocide law that would criminalise the denial of crimes perpetrated by communist regimes; in the same way many EU countries on EU parliament recommendation ban the denial of the Holocaust. All sorts of excuses were dished out by the European Commission in its avoidance to place communist crimes on the same criminal list as Nazi ones during and post- World War Two. The most repugnant and hypocritical excuse, to my view, was the one that insisted that one cannot compare the people who built Auschwitz (Nazi Germany) with the people who liberated it (Russia). What an evil excuse this is when one looks the facts and truth in the face: Nazi Germany with its allies, who essentially became allies upon pressure of Nazi military occupation, left some 6 million victims while Soviet Communist Russia left over 30 million victims of the communist regime, around the same time! Similar ratios occurred everywhere in Europe where Nazi occupation took hold and communists ended up winning the war – many more victims of communist crimes than those of Nazi crimes (in Croatia the communists decided to label the latter as Ustashe crimes). But Russia was aligned with the Allies then, which was a most effective and strong way to cover up the crime of genocide over its people that was manifold higher in number than those of the Holocaust. If numbers do not count to define genocide, then certainly innocence of victims does, and both Holocaust and Communist Crimes are the grim reapers of same meaning and same gravity and same evil. Then the European Commission in 2010 also rambled on how Communists did not target minorities and Nazi’s did and, therefore Nazi and Communist crimes could not be equal! True, the communists did not target minorities just majorities – political opponents!

It was September 2019 when the European Parliament passed a resolution that equated communism with Nazism , and this led to a torrent of attacks by unhappy Communist Parties throughout Europe (e.g. Spain. Portugal, Greece, Italy). But of course, a resolution is not law, and it seems many more years will pass until that happens and denial of Communist Crimes will carry the same weight as Holocaust Denial has been for several years in many countries. But it is not just the Communist Parties that have vested interests in resisting full exposure of communist crimes and their terrible and terrifying toll of humanity because there are many historians of Jewish or other ethnic or religious extraction whose lifelong work appears to have been maintaining the rights of victims of the Holocaust and Nazi atrocities, always placing them in importance above victims of communism even though the latter were more numerous and perished by equally depraved, evil and cruel methods of slaughter.

These people have come up with the term of “revisionisms” to try and repel historical research and truth-finding post Cold War, when many formerly forbidden for access communist government archives had been made accessible, is tantamount to horrific pursuit of lies for personal gain in my eyes. It often strikes one to believe that those who hold the Holocaust as the greatest evil committed in mankind’s history would not like it one bit if communism turns out, on account of deserved recognition of its evil, to have been greater evil than imaginable, even by the Holocaust standards.

Croatia has a number of such historians whose families were staunch communist operatives, who evidently received many favours and privileges because of that political loyalty to communist Yugoslavia; who stretch the falsities of history so far that they are prepared to invent things, horrible things, in order to corroborate what they are inventing as absolute truth. E.g., Ivo Goldstein is one such historian who has been persistently trying to downplay and justify communist crimes, justify the unjustifiable, in former Yugoslavia and support the gross fabrication of numbers of victims of Croatia’s WWII Jasenovac camp, the so-called Nazi crimes also labelled as Ustasha crimes, by inventing in his mind a bone-crushing machine that was, according to him, brought to Croatian WWII concentration camp by the Nazi-allied Ustashe regime so as to hide the true number of bodies, victims (2018 Ivo Goldstein book “Jasenovac”) (Goldstein’s claim of bone-crushing machines in World War Two Jasenovac was subsequently debunked by, among other facts, lack of any forensic evidence that would corroborate their use there)! How twisted and mean-minded one can get! It would seem, the fact that almost 94% of Croatia’s voters voted YES at the independence from communist Yugoslavia referendum in May of 1991 means absolutely nothing today to historians like Ivo Goldstein. They are staunch communist Yugoslavs and seem not to be able to tolerate well the fact that Yugoslavia is no more, that Croatia is independent – that seeking the truth is no revisionism. They stop at nothing it seems, and even invent concepts such as neo-Ustashism even though Ustashas were disbanded as organisation soon after end of World War Two and new organisation under that name has not been registered or formed since. But to people like that, this too is not important because with the word Ustashi they mean Croatian patriots and they cannot stomach those much – they are in heart and mind communists. And they know well the atrocities committed under the communist flag. And evidently they don’t like that truth, of course; so, to avoid their families being implicated in having committed horrible crimes against their own people in order for communism to thrive unimpeded, it’s easier to carry on with lies?

On Monday, September 25, 2023, Ivo Goldstein’s latest book, “Historical Revisionism and Neo-Ustashism – Croatia 1989-2022”, was presented in Zagreb. The book is reputed to be the final part of a kind of trilogy about crimes of deeds and crimes of words (but of course, not the communist crimes), which includes his books “Jasenovac” and “Anti-Semitism in Croatia”.

The author of that book points out in his writing that by exposing the historical revisionism that has gripped Croatia for the last thirty years, not only historiography is being defended, but also democratic civilisation. There you have it! The man presents as a total fake when it comes to history and democracy. The man is evidently afraid that the truth of communist crimes is coming out bit by bit, and his effectively poison-pen tries very hard to stop historical fact-finding by labelling it revisionism. In the light of government archives being opened for research once communist Yugoslavia crumbled after the fall of Berlin Wall in 1989, there has been much research done into Croatia’s World War Two, and post it, history, and new mass graves, besides some 1700 of then already unearthed, that tell chilling tales about victims of communist crimes, are being discovered almost every month. One needs to look very hard, search with strong determination, to find references to these in Croatia’s left-faction-pro-communist mainstream media outputs. By calling legitimate and objective historical research revisionism Goldstein, it seems, wants to save democratic civilisation from the truth! Or rather, wants to wallow in the filthy history that was written by the criminal and cruel communist Yugoslavia regime, which included his late father Slavko.

It eludes both conviction and persuasion of a truly democratic and just person that someone like Ivo Goldstein could teach the world about democracy when he has spent his political and literary adult life keeping the flame of the totalitarian communist Yugoslavia regime alive, to this day!

At the book launch it was said that historical revisionism is first of all politics, that is, an attempt to gain political advantage through the manipulation of facts, that in Croatia it is most often associated with the Ustashism and NDH (WWII Independent State of Croatia) and named Franjo Tudjman as the most important progenitor of revisionism and neo-Ustashism (Neo-Nazism equivalent?)!

Historical revisionism in fact refers to any reinterpretation of recorded history. This fact may have eluded Goldstein and those practicing the “art of pointing fingers at revisionism that is not revisionism”. The fact is that the recorded history of Croatia (Yugoslavia) did not have records of communist crimes because these were hidden and forbidden for access even for research, and now that these have been available during the past three decades Goldstein calls the revealing of them historical revisionism instead of saying that they are correcting historical facts, or adding to historical facts, in order to reveal the truth. While allowing newly discovered evidence and facts to enter the historical record is undoubtedly correct and just, the interpretation of all facts to reflect contemporary morality then becomes a controversial aspect of the topic of revisionism. Many worry, rightly so, that historical facts, without having the benefit of all of them, are a distortion of history that must be corrected.

And so here we have it. Depravity and political prostitution has been the strongest at the expense of justice for victims of communist crimes! The history has recorded that almost 94% of Croatian eligible voters decided they want out of communism in 1991 and Franjo Tudjman led them to independence. But, Goldstein and his guests at the launch of his newest book, label him the progenitor of neo-Ustashism and not the progenitor of lasting Croatian freedom and democracy! Goldstein and his guests at this book launch, and generally, never acknowledge the fact that this historical revisionism they regurgitate about, did actually produce many admirable works of most credible research (including discovery of victims listed as having being slaughtered in Jasenovac camp by the Ustashe in Woorld War Two who in fact were killed elsewhere, some even by the communist hand… ) and books on historical truth they themselves should refer to when editing and correcting their books and writings into Second or Third Editions. But then, one cannot hold one’s breath until one sees such revised editions because to Goldstein and historians, who promote similar historical distortions, it would mean that they themselves are practicing revisionism of which they accuse truth-finders!

Perhaps we will see the day when, because of historians like Ivo Goldstein and numerous Communist Party operatives across the world, who paint truth about communist crimes into everything that it is not, the just world will deliver the long overdue laws that will outlaw denial of communist crimes just as there are ones that outlaw Holocaust denial. Wouldn’t that be pure justice, no politics involved, just facts! Perhaps we will see the day when Croatia will outlaw denial of communist crimes and the display of communist symbols in public.  Ina Vukic

Serbia Made Itself Jew-Free, Croatia Did Not!

Antisemitic postage stamps in Serbia 1941-1945

Simone Weil (French philosopher and political activist) said in her book The Need for Roots: prelude towards a declaration of duties towards mankind (Routledge and Paul, 1952) that truth is “a need of the soul”. She went on to say: “The need for truth is a need more sacred than any other need. Yet it is never mentioned. One feels afraid to read once one has realised the quantity and monstrousness of the material falsehoods paraded in even the books of the most reputable authors. Thereafter one reads as though one were drinking from a contaminated well.” The days Weil lived in are those we live in and have lived for decades, where politics get in the way of the truth, of facts and the duties to humanity often take a back seat.

Serbia has with Efraim Zuroff’s (head of Jerusalem branch of Simon Wiesenthal Center) conspicuous help managed to exculpate itself and Serbs from the horrendous crimes committed by WWII Milan Nedic government and Draza Mihajlovic’s Chetniks, said recently Dr Esther Gitman, a USA and Israel based historian.

Two things have prompted me to write this article. The first is Efraim Zuroff’s recent tantrum published in Serbia’s Kurir that the plaque dedicated to Blessed Alojzije Stepinac fixed along the Sorrowful Way (Via Dolorosa) in Jerusalem should be torn down because according to Zuroff Stepinac’s plaque belongs nowhere in the world and that he would act in getting it removed (despite the very truth and fact that research since year 2000 by Dr Esther Gitman has yielded copious amount of historical documentation that shows beyond reasonable doubt that Stepinac in fact played a leading role in rescuing Jews and other ethnic groups during WWII Croatia).

“Who will be heaviest? No one!
Because the Jew holds the scale ” !

On publicly commenting Prime Minister Netanyahu’s trip to Ukraine last week, taken to be a yet another opportunity to assess Israel’s relations with the post-Communist new democracies of Eastern Europe, and especially those with a Holocaust past of participation in the systematic mass murder of Jews, Zuroff took the opportunity to say that Ukraine in recent years has been one of the worst offenders in terms of distorting the history of the Holocaust, and glorifying individuals who collaborated with the Nazis in implementing the Final Solution.

This would be fine were it not true that Zuroff takes it upon himself to help Serbia distort the history of the Holocaust. We read in the news that Serbia is planning to adopt a law to create a memorial centre in Belgrade for tens of thousands of Jews, Serbs and Roma killed by Nazis in World War II, preventing plans to redevelop two concentration camp sites in the capital city into commercial space. Draft legislation will be sent to parliament in November with the “active involvement of the Jewish community in Serbia,” Efraim Zuroff told reporters after meeting with Serbia’s President Aleksandar Vucic this week. He said he got assurances from the Serb leader that the bill will be adopted and the government will provide funds for the memorial. The fact that it was the Serbs and not the Germans that brought masses of Jews to slaughter in WWII Serbia does not appear to deter Zuroff from towing Serbia’s line of covering up its role in the Holocaust.

All crimes should be talked about openly but not using fabrications and opinions as facts, which is exactly what Zuroff is evidently doing.

The second reason for writing this article is last week’s utterly deplorable comparison of today’s Croatia with the WWII Independent State of Croatia by Milorad Pupovac, member of Croatian Parliament representing a part of Serb minority in Croatia.  “I would not want this country to come up with the same experience, which was an attempt in the 20th century, to create a Croatian state and to collaborate (with the Nazis) … How things are now, the way many people in this country, including those who sit with us in Parliament are relating to that idea, such possibility is not unrealistic…”, Pupovac said.

While the Croatian government leadership has responded to Pupovac’s deplorable behaviour as unacceptable the mind boggles why there are no stronger moves to commence proceedings that would remove Pupovac from the Croatian Parliament. Croatian Parliament was instituted amidst the bloody Serb aggression against Croatia’s independence struggle and members of Pupovac’s immediate family were active in that aggression and ethnic cleansing of Croats from their homes. Pupovac has for years been on a rampage against Croatian independence and on the path of spreading lies about WWII Croatia just like Zuroff does, covering up and justifying communist crimes, to name only a few of his public activities that actually vilify the very country in whose parliament he sits.

Anti-Jewish poster issued in Serbia in autumn of 1941 for the Grand Anti-Masonic Exhibition in Belgrade from October 22, 1941, to January 19, 1942. The exhibit focused on the alleged Jewish-Communist-Masonic conspiracy to achieve world domination with the intent to increase hatred against outsider groups that opposed Nazi Germany.

The truly distressing matter in Zuroff’s and Pupovac’s claims regarding the preposterously impossible numbers they say were killed by Croatia’s Ustasha regime is that they talk of these fabricated numbers as fact in order to make their vilification against Croatia even larger. I am astonished at the fact that no one in any national authority that protects the public from such terrible falsehoods has yet called these two men (and others in this category of disturbing undermining and promoting of false history and today) to account and compelled them to prove beyond reasonable doubt the numbers of victims they claim are true, are a verifiable fact.

A thing about the Holocaust in Serbia that bothers multitudes across the world is that Serbs themselves have put the whole blame for the exterminations upon the Germans who occupied Serbia! On the other hand, the Serbs will not do the same when it comes to the Holocaust related crimes perpetrated on WWII Croatian soil under German occupation! The Serbs will keep on vilifying Croatia by calling it a Nazi Germany puppet state and yet they will not do the same for Serbia that was, actually, more of a Nazi Germany puppet state than Croatia (Croatia’s WWII goal for independence, for self-determination, appears to have been much stronger than Serbia’s).

While it appears that Israeli Efraim Zuroff, and Croatian Serb Milorad Pupovac, will stop at nothing to cover up or at least dilute to a kind of insignificance the horrors of the extermination of Jews in WWII Serbia, it is incumbent upon us all that the truth, the real truth that can be verified, is told. One thing is for sure, Serbia itself and Serbs were the exterminators od Jews in WWII Serbia and not Serbia’s occupiers, the Germans as Zuroff and Pupovac would like the world to believe. Serbs were most willing partners in getting Serbia to the Jew-free status among European nations; they did it swiftly, they did it by May 1942!

Dr Esther Gitman

Dr Esther Gitman, a leading historian specialising in the rescue and survival of Jews during WWII especially in the region of former Yugoslavia (mainly Croatia, Bosnia and Herzegovina and Serbia) has on several occasions in recent times commented strongly in criticism of Efraim Zuroff’s ludicrous claims about the enormity of Holocaust crime related matters in WWII Croatia and Cardinal Alojzije Stepinac in particular that do not stack up to any verifiable findings and about their pursuits in attempts to cover up or minimise Holocaust related crimes in WWII Serbia. She has often reminded her public that research findings confirm the fact that WWII Serbia was one of the first European countries to declare itself Jew-free (May 1942) – with pride, to boot! On speaking recently to Dr Esther Gitman, I asked about where her research has led her to as far as WWII Serbia was concerned.

“The essence of it is that Serbia was not an occupied state, Milan Nedic was the military prime minister. They had their freedoms provided they fought the communists and killed Jews. They did a very good job in concealing the truth from the world.  My preliminary research and summary are here only to demonstrate how many armies they had in Serbia and what was expected of them.  Serbia to a certain extent was controlled by Nazi Germany and at time by Bulgaria but in essence they were free to print their own stamps and with their own name. For so many years most of us believed that Serbia was an occupied country and that it was the Nazis who killed Jews, Roma, Croats and others. The Nazi regime had no time to run after the so-called Serbian enemies, the Serbs themselves did it. It is highly recommended to send some students to the USA, (DGFP,  Department of State. Documents on German Foreign Policy, 1918-1945. Series D, Vols. 11-13, Washington D.C., 1960-1964.  See also, United States” National Archives. Microcopy,– Roll—Frame, and  United States, National Archives. Record Group).

By not searching for truth Croatia has been duped by Serbia for more than seven decades. They taught you and your children how you murdered 1,700,000 or 700,000 and you believed them even though it makes no sense. In Croatia, in total, there were approximately 2,500,000 and Serbs about 750,000, the whole story that the world and the Vatican are accepting makes no sense. Please go and make sense of what has happened to you from 1918-1941 and from 1941-1945,” Dr Gitman emphasised.

Antisemitic poster Serbia 1941-1945:
“his weapons: democracy, masonry, capitalism and communism leads to death”

“In April 1941, the commander in chief of the German army issued a proclamation defining the conditions of German rule in occupied areas of Serbia…and on 30 May 1941 the first puppet government was established. That is a Commissioner Administration headed by Milan Acimovic…  But the above were temporary figures and the German authorities had sound reasons for choosing General Milan Nedić to head the puppet (in name only) government. He was well known among Serbs as an elite General Staff officer of the pre-1918 Serbian and interwar Yugoslav armies, and he had held the two highest military positions in the country. He was regarded as a man of great personal authority, not simply because of his high professional standing, but also because of his commanding behaviour in official positions.

On August 27, 1941, Nedic informed Heinrich  Danckelmann by letter that after consulting with the commissioners and leading representatives of the Serbian people, he (Nedic) would be willing to become prime minister if the military commander would agree to specific operating conditions,” Dr Gitman continued.

Dr Gitman’s research concludes that the conditions sought by Nedic were as follows:

  • First, a Serbian government would be formed that would manage the affairs of the Serbian people under the supervision of the military commander, to conform to German military, political, and economic interests.
  • Second, the Serbian government would be allowed to develop an armed force (without which it could not assure peace and order in the country), consisting of a gendarmerie of up to 10,000 men and auxiliary armed forces according to need, and, with the permission of the military commander, both of them would be equipped with the Yugoslav weapons captured by the Germans.
  • Third, Serbian prisoners of war in Germany who were ill, all prisoners over the age of 55, and those prisoners needed for the reconstruction of the country would be released to their homes, and the Serbian government would be allowed to send food supplies to improve the rations of prisoners remaining in Germany.
  • Fourth, the “economic and administrative boundaries” of Serbia would be improved by having German troops occupy certain areas (meaning, apparently, northeast Bosnia).
  • And finally, the impoverishment, persecution, and murder of Serbs in Croatia and in Bulgarian and in Hungarian-occupied areas would cease.

In addition to these major conditions, Nedic also wanted a number of other concessions. He asked for a political council to promulgate the new political arrangements. The struggle against Communism was to be considered primarily the concern of the Serbian people and its government, with the German army helping only insofar as the means used by the Serbian government proved insufficient. In cases of sabotage, reprisals were to be applied only against those who were guilty and never against the innocent, and they were not to be undertaken until complete information had been obtained from the Serbian government. And the use of Serbian national and state emblems was to be allowed.

“be on the lookout/you will not know or be aware”

“From Jozo Tomasevich we learn that there is no written record of Danckelmann specifically accepting these conditions, but in Nedic’s speech on the occasion of his installation, he thanked Danckelmann “for the full power of authority [Vollmacht] which it pleased it would seem that a real understanding existed between the two men, though only in oral form. Other documentary evidence, including a circular sent by Turner to all German area and district commands in Serbia, dated August 2.9.1941, shows that Danckelmann did promise Nedic that the Serbian authorities, under German supervision, would have a large degree of independence. Turner wrote (For Turner’s circular, see Micr, No-T-50, Roll 246, Frs. 190-9 I):

A promise was given to the government that, under German supervision, it will be given the highest possible degree of independence in administration, please, therefore, limit the activity of the administrative groups to purely supervisory functions.” A note from Minister of Interior Acirnovic to Turner, dated September 16,1941, protesting against the interference of German authorities in the operations of the Serbian gendarmerie and other government armed forces, is further proof that the Nedic’s administration understood that it would be largely free in using these forces.  Order No. I of September 5, I941, to all government employees and all armed formations under Nedic’s command encouraged government officials, the armed forces, and the public at large to resist the spreading rebellion. It stressed the need for discipline, hard work, honesty, and devotion to the good of the people, point 6 said: ‘All national forces, both of the state gendarmerie and police and of loyal Serbian men at large, can have at this time only one objective, that is, to save the Serbian people from new bloodshed and sacrifices, removing without compromise all those elements in their midst that would want to push the nation into total ruin. Under these circumstances, my orders, directed through the appropriate state organs, must be carried out by all people without hesitation,’ ” Dr Esther Gitman articulated the findings of her research and conclusions they command.

“New York Times: the press in the USA is 97% in Jewish hands”

It is difficult to know how long the Holocaust and other victims of WWII Serbia will have to wait for justice, but one thing is crystal clear: it was Milan Nedic and his government’s operatives and loyal followers and the Serbian Chetniks (loyal to the deposed Serbian Monarchy) that actively brought WWII Serbia to be one of the first European states  to become “Judenfrei” (Jew-Free); the Nazis did not bring the victims to slaughter, the Serbs did it in the name of Greater Serbia.  During the Second World War, the Serbs were ethnically cleaning Jews out of their homes in Serbia, just as they ethnically cleansed the 1990s Croats in Croatia and Bosnia and Herzegovina out of theirs, and the role of Serbs in communist crimes committed during and after World War II was so great that its disclosure could shock the entire humanity of the world. This is not hate speech, this is the documented and verifiable truth! Ina Vukic

How “miscalculations” may have made a “prostak” out of Mr Holocaust

By Branko Miletic
(First published in Independent Australia 14 January 2018)

The Weisenthal Centre’s “Mr Holocaust” would seem to be undermining the very Holocaust history he claims to support, writes Branko Miletic.

In Yiddish, the term “prostak” denotes a wilfully ignorant person, while in the various interconnected Slavic languages, the word takes on a wider meaning of being uncouth or rude.

Historically, going back to the Ninth Century, Yiddish as a language was all but annihilated by the unmitigated evil that was the Holocaust.

And for almost as long as there has been the Holocaust, there has been Holocaust denial.

No-one is more aware of this than the Simon Wiesenthal Centre’s Yiddish-speaking and Jerusalem-based director Efraim Zuroff — a man who has given himself the nickname of “Mr Holocaust”.

Since taking up his post in 1998, “Mr Holocaust” has guided the Wiesenthal Centre into a growing list of controversies, ranging from victim-shaming in the Balkans, to alienating his allies across the world, and now to threatening the very Holocaust history he claims to support.

Denial, it seems, can be a two-way street.

Take, for example, his repeated comments on the July 1995 massacre of 8,372 Bosnians by Serb forces in Srebrenica.

Despite the U.N., EU, U.S. and most governments around the world declaring it an “act of a genocide”, Zuroff claimed it could not have been so “as only men were killed”.

His remarks earned sharp rebukes from many quarters, including from Holocaust survivor and Nobel Prize winner Elie Wiesel.

While Menachem Rosensaft, general counsel of the World Jewish Congress, who teaches the law of genocide at Columbia and Cornell universities, called Zuroffs opinion, “wrong from a legal point of view”.

Nor was his the first time Zuroffs’ miscalculations have caused mayhem, however the attempt to downplay the gravity of the Srebrenica massacre also goes to the heart of the issue here.

As Marko Attila Hoare, associate professor of economics, politics, and history at Kingston University, said in 2011 about the denial of the genocide at Srebrenica in July 1995:

It tends to go hand-in-hand with the denial of the genocidal crimes carried out by Serbian Nazi quislings and collaborators during World War II.”

As if to underline that he is an equal-opportunity offender, in 2011, Zuroff’s carelessness led to the acquittal of a suspected Nazi war criminal in Hungary, causing much consternation for both Holocaust survivors and their families.

In the ensuing aftermath, László Karsai, the central European country’s leading Holocaust historian and himself the son of a Holocaust survivor, labelled him an “hysterical, narcissistic Nazi-hunter, working only to earn a good living”. He went on to say the Wiesenthal Centre used publicity in order to “justify its own existence before its sponsors”.

Moving his attention back to the former Yugoslavia, Zuroff’s downplaying of Serbia’s World War Two “Judenfrei” history has assisted for now in keeping this fact out of the media spotlight.

Then there is his silence over the former Yugoslav State erecting statues to Nazi collaborators and the rehabilitation of its own collaborationist history — a process that goes on to this day unabated.

Any attempt to publicly challenge Zuroff over such anomalies to his public pronouncements in relation to World War Two Balkan history elicits instant condemnation from the man himself, his organisation and his fellow travellers in the media — most of whose idea of journalism often more closely resembles bullying rather than objective reporting.

Even when simple arithmetics highlights the unexplained holes in the “accepted” conclusions, those that have dared to cross this apparent verboten Rubicon find themselves in the crosshairs of a well-oiled and, apparently, well-funded media campaign of character assassination.

In 1996, American historian Dr Philip Cohen discovered this the hard way after publishing his book: Serbia’s Secret War, which used Yugoslav, U.S., British, German and Russian archives to disprove many of Yugoslavia’s inflated World War Two death tolls.

Cohen’s work demolished the “victimology” that for decades has characterised just about everything that has been written about Yugoslavia’s role in World War Two.

Despite being lauded by former British PM Margaret Thatcher for his extensive research and despite being Jewish himself, Cohen discovered what happens when you challenge the status quo, courtesy of a tsunami of vilification, threats of physical violence — even being labelled a “Nazi sympathiser” by both the global Left and the Wiesenthal Centre.

But in many ways, Philip Cohen was a trailblazer, as one of the first historians to actually use simple, primary school arithmetic on decades-old publicly available data to pry open the floodgates of truth in relation to parts of Balkan World War Two history.

For example, between 1931 and 1948, according to Dr. Cohen (and the Holocaust Encyclopaedia), Europe’s Jewish population fell from 9.5 million in 1931 to 3.5 million in 1948 — meaning a net loss of some 6 million people, mostly courtesy of the Nazi death camps.

Over the exact same period of time, according to Belgrade’s official and publicly available population statistics, the number of people in Yugoslavia increased by over 1.3 million people, with 700,000 of those newly born citizens being Serbs, according to the same figures.

Delving further into the statistics, as Cohen and others found, the population of Yugoslavia, according to its published last census just prior to the outbreak of War in 1939, was almost 15.4 million.

In 1948, in the country’s first post-World War Two census, which was published by its new Communist government and then republished by the United Nations, showed a population of over 15.8 million — a growth of some 400,000 people. This made Yugoslavia the only European country actively militarily involved in World War Two to have its population increase during the period of the war.

Although these figures have been publicly available for at least 70 years, Zuroff and other commentators have consistently claimed that the decrease of 6 million people during the Holocaust is somehow comparable to the increase of Yugoslavia’s wartime population by some 400,000 people.

This odd analogy has been repeated by historians far and wide – including prominent Australian ones, such as self-styled “Nazi-hunter” Mark Aarons – as somehow being equal in “monstrosity”.

While Yugoslavia’s role in World War Two is a typical Balkan mix of myth, propaganda and bravado, the fact that such obvious errors, most of which contravene even the basic rules of addition and subtraction, can enter the annals of standard and accepted history, and go unchallenged for decades simply beggars belief.

One excuse for this mathematical incongruity is the consistent failure to check simple raw data, such as publicly-available population figures, while at the same time blindly republishing and rehashing numbers that were little more than Communist propaganda.

The other reason is a fear of public abuse from those that wish to keep their “crimes of miscalculation” covered up.

Were they to become common knowledge, they could potentially provide a massive shot in the arm to those that crave for even a whiff of “scientific credibility” to disprove the Holocaust and who wish to wipe the history of this awful event from the collective memory of mankind.

Perhaps the Yiddish term prostak is applicable to a few more people, including all those so-called “historians”, for whom the use of a calculator stretches their already seemingly limited skill set.
