Russia’s Motives Unscrupulous In Labeling EU With Neo-Nazi Elements

Foreign Affairs ministry of the Russian Federation has on 4 May, to mark the 70th anniversary of victory over fascism, published a report titled “Neo-Nazism – a dangerous threat to human rights, democracy and the rule of law” in which it sharply criticises the strengthening of right-wing and nationalistic political movements in Europe and some NATO countries outside the EU and expresses objections towards the European authorities for not having the will-power to increase repressive methods towards such movements.

Well, such a document is not surprising. I mean, Russia was not likely to mark the 70th anniversary of victory over fascism by addressing circa 36 million of innocent victims of communist fascism under Stalin and after him.
The introduction states: “The present report of the Ministry of Foreign Affairs of the Russian Federation is primarily aimed at demonstrating current situation with the spread and potential consequences of the neo-Nazi threat in a number of countries. It is focused on the most outstanding and obvious tendencies in this sphere that pose extreme threat to the stability and security of the world order.

The report consists of three chapters. The first describes global neo-Nazi tendencies in a number of countries and demonstrates how they contradict international legal obligations in the sphere of combating Nazism, neo-Nazism, aggressive nationalism, discrimination, xenophobia, racism and other forms of intolerance. The second chapter of the report contains fundamental provisions of international legal instruments and mechanisms. The third chapter exemplifies manifestations of neo-Nazism and related concepts and ideologies of hatred and points out the progress of a number of countries in combating neo-Nazism that requires further development and consolidation.

The data of the United Nations, the Council of Europe, the OSCE, international NGOs including human rights organizations such as Simon Wiesenthal Center and the International Human Rights Movement ‘World without Nazism’, reports of the national human rights structures, ombudsmen as well as statistics and researches of state authorities, studies of the leading world experts related to Nazism and neo-Nazism and documents from the Archive of Foreign Policy of the Russian Federation were used as sources in the preparation of this report.

The report is dedicated to the 70th anniversary of the Great Victory in commemoration of millions of people who have liberated the world from Nazism.

No one is forgotten and nothing is forgotten.”

Wrong, wrong, wrong!

All the victims of communist crimes are forgotten in this and Russia should know that in today’s world one cannot condemn one totalitarian regime of the past without condemning the other, for both were evil and oppressive. My feeling is that this document has been put together in the resistance to the movement in Eastern Europe that is exposing communist crimes for what they were – utter horror and inhumanity. The other Holocaust! Furthermore, this report would also serve as some justification for Russian interference in Ukraine, even if its reasoning and interpretation of events in Ukraine are quite twisted and evil.

The document pays special attention to Eastern European countries where there is presence of resistance to the spread of Russian influence on the continent – Ukraine, Poland and the Baltic countries – but other countries are also analysed, such as Austria, Belgium, Canada, Croatia, France, Germany, Great Britain, Denmark, Italy, Spain, Sweden, Switzerland, Ukraine … Curiously, given that it talks about supposed denial of rights to ethnic minorities, the report circumvents Serbia and all the ultranationalists there whose actions and inactions have seriously denied the Croatian and other minorities in Serbia many human and citizenship rights.
The Russians, among other things, state that “aggressive nationalism, ethnic and religious intolerance” in Croatia was directed primarily against the largest ethnic minority, Serbs, whose numbers have decreased by two-thirds since 1991. Suffice to say, the document has gathered all sorts of bits and pieces, uncorroborated or unproven acts of vandalism as to who actually perpetrated the acts of vandalism, stories of alleged hate crimes etc. Referring to unspecified data of unspecified human rights activists (therefore, cannot be verified), the document also states that during the last 19 years, about 30,000 Serbs in Croatia, Orthodox Christians, “converted to another faith, that is, accepted Catholicism.”

The president of Croatian Parliament’s Committee on Human rights and minority rights, Furio Radin, said for the Slobodna Dalmacija newspaper that he “never heard about 30,000 Serbs converting to Roman Catholicism” and concluded these were “unfounded figures, for if they were legitimate figures we would have addressed the matter already,” Radin concluded.

Although he was among the signatories of the recent Declaration Against Intolerance and Ethnocentrism in Croatia, Radin assures that Croatia cannot be accused of Neo-Nazism.

We have in Croatia some cases of sporadic flirting with Ustasha-ism, stadium nationalism, but the Russian Foreign Affairs Ministry assessment general assessment doe not stand, said Radin who is also a member of the Croatian Parliament representing the Italian minority in Croatia,

When it comes to the crux of the matter the Russian assessment of Neo-Nazism in Europe does not hold water at all. Not only does it use unverifiable and dubious data but also much of its data sources seem quite biased, and in the case of Croatia the report favours the views of former communists and Serbs in Croatia. One cannot with confidence say that this is an objective assessment that it pretends to be. But that’s Russia for you these days. Just pile it on irresponsibly and see what falls out…

Member of the Executive Board of the Croatian Helsinki Committee Ivo Banac said that “in Croatia, like elsewhere” there had been “incidents related to neo-fascism” – but asks “who are Russians to call others by names and what is their interest in doing that.”

Of course, as expected, the Russians think that there must be laws that prohibit historical revisionism! In other words: laws that prevent the whole truth of history from being recorded as part of that factual history!

With regards to Russian’s comments about the non-existence of laws that prohibit historical revisionism, Banac is adamant that such a law should not be passed in Croatia because it would limit freedom of speech. Regardless of the fact that someone might abuse facts, everyone has to have a right to freedom of speech, because it is the most effective fight for truth, a in no case should there only be some organisations, as ‘the Antifascist League’, favoured by the Russians, said Banac.
The Report says, “The rise of neo-Nazism and radical nationalism in Ukraine has recently, in particular after the unconstitutional coup d’état of February 2014, reached an unprecedented level. The whole range of manifestations and signs of neo Nazism has been registered in the country, including consistent, state-level rehabilitation and glorification of Nazi accomplices of the World War II, policy of falsification of its history, swift legitimization of radical nationalists and their entry to state power structures, purges and punitive military operations concerning the people labeled as conducting ‘anti-Ukrainian activities’ “… So, according to Russia, the West is supporting a Neo-Nazi state of Ukraine! Yeah, right!

While most will not take this report seriously it obviously stands as a part of a wider anti-European Union and anti-Ukraine propaganda campaign, mostly criticizing the Baltic States and Kiev. But it is insulting to Croatia, nevertheless. Croatia should now push harder towards lustration (getting rid from high public offices of all former communists in high positions under communist Yugoslavia) and towards getting real justice for the victims of communist crimes. And as for the EU and other countries Russia criticizes in this report for not doing much about stopping freedom of speech and expression one can suggest: bring on more sanctions against Russia than the current lot and give loud support to the condemnation of communist crimes! Croatia: Communist Remnants Defy Sanctions Against Russia

Turning to prostitution (unworthy use of abilities) to relieve poverty has always been the road taken by very few and those few have more often than not been seen as having the morals of a toerag.

While Croatia’s economic crisis demands alleviating actions it’s contemptible that at this time of burning political tension between EU and USA, on one side, and Russia, on the other, the current Croatian government is sending a delegation of 80 people to Russia for the so-called Russia-Croatia Economic Forum. The delegation is said to arrive in Russia for 17 February meeting under the excuse of lobbying for investments in Croatia by Russian investors. The leaders of that delegation from Croatian side are the minister for the economy, Ivan Vrdoljak, and Croatia’s ex-president Stjepan Mesic. Suffice to say both still very attached to communist ideals of former Yugoslavia who have evidently perfected the art of politically corrupt undermining of Croatian independence from communist Yugoslavia.

This latest move to undermine Croatia’s standing as a dedicated member of the EU and, therefore, Trans-Atlantic trade and investment alliance, is a stark reminder of modus operandi communist Yugoslavia’s Josip Broz Tito used in order to play both sides during the Cold war era for gain and furtherance of his oppressive and murderous communist program. Tito hid his alliance with communist Russia very well through his public endeavours that saw him not siding with either the “West” of the “East”; in 1955 Tito contributed significantly to the milestone that saw the strengthening of the Non-Aligned Movement and he cunningly used that very act to fool the “West”, in particular, into thinking he had given up any affiliation with communist Russia when he broke away from Stalin’s Soviet Union in 1948 – hence, securing a great deal of financial aid from the “West”.

An attentive pupil of Tito’s agenda, Stjepan Mesic, is doing the same today as Tito did during his days: playing for both sides of political fields and socio-economic spheres, very possibly under the delusional excuse that Croatia could play an important role in the mediation of some resolutions to the political tensions between EU/US and Russia (?).
Of course, this visit to Russia by the Croatian delegation predicts questionable economic benefits and significant damage to Croatia’s political standing as EU member state. It demonstrates that the Croatian left oriented government and its supporters have not fully taken on board the moral fiber of belonging to a union such as the EU. Still sitting on two chairs, playing opposing sides for clearly economic and politically suspect reasons. The fact that the Russian investors to be present at the said forum are subject to the EU sanctions imposed against Russia amidst the Ukraine crisis obviously means nothing to these delegates from Croatia except that joining with them in a conference/forum will undermine Croatia’s reputation and standing within the international circles. To demonstrate the foul mindset this Croatian delegation to Russia thrives on, one needs only to refer to the statement made for Croatian television news February 14 by Stjepan Mesic: “business not under the sanctions will be discussed at the Forum”. So, according to the Croatian delegation it’s OK to mingle with the sanctioned subjects, do business with them, as long as you talk about something other than the business or industry subject to sanctions against them!

Utterly contemptible!

The reader may well ask: how is it possible that at this time of intensive Russian aggression against Ukraine, Croatia is behaving as if it is not a member of the EU? The US Ambassador to Croatia, HE Kenneth Merten has expressed grave concerns over this visit to Russia by the Croatian delegation. France and Germany are at this time investing a lot of energy into stopping the war and Russian aggression in Ukraine, and here we have a number of Croatian political prostitutes undermining even this by putting a “feather in Russia’s cap” with their mere presence there.

Utterly contemptible!

The inauguration of Croatia’s new president Kolinda Grabar-Kitarovic occurs on Sunday 15 February 2015 although her duties as president do not commence until the 20th. It’s to be expected that the visit of Croatian government delegation to Russia, with which she has no connection, will negatively reflect upon the make-up of delegations to attend the inauguration from leading EU countries and beyond. Sabotaging the new president’s inauguration in such a perfidious manner as sending a delegation to Russia at times of sanctions against it is an example of how the former communists work in Croatia. Had their Ivo Josipovic won the presidential elections they would not have entered into such dirty dealings, I’m quite sure. One trusts that Grabar-Kitarovic’s presidential mandate will see clearer allegiance to the EU and the Trans-Atlantic trade and investment alliance in all aspects of political and economic life than what is happening under the presidency of Ivo Josipovic. Perhaps calling the government to task will trigger early general elections and subsequent unity of Croatians for a better future. The road ahead is not an easy task by any means – multitudes still “hold the fort” for the former communist Yugoslavia, some are vicious, and they are capable of anything that undermines progress of democracy and unity with countries that openly condemn the totalitarian regime of former Yugoslavia. Perhaps this visit by these former communists from Croatia to Russia will open many an eye in the “West” to see the real fraudulence of Tito and his followers, who, by the way, did not want an independent Croatia in 1990’s and are now undermining even Ukraine’s plights for self-determination by giving credence to Russia, the aggressor against Ukraine. The West is cautious about going to war against Russia over Ukraine and the main tools to get Russia to back away from Ukraine are economic sanctions – and look at what the Croatian government and ex-president are doing: going to Russia to give it new business opportunities! Also, Serbia is holding onto its strong friendship with Russia at the same time it works on becoming a member of the EU – and look at how helpful Serbia’s communist friends from Croatia are: Croatia is a member of the EU and is doing business with Russia, the current enemy to the EU over Ukraine! Croatia: Benghazy Scrubber Scrubs Western Balkans

Lately, Victoria Nuland, US Assistant Secretary of State for Europe and Eurasia, is best known, or, rather, notorious, for her role in objecting to the initial set of the Benghazi attack talking points when she reportedly asked that references to al Qaeda and previous CIA warnings about threats posed to U.S. diplomats in Libya be scrubbed from the document. I.e., she is said to have demanded that (accurate) assessments of terrorist involvement be scrubbed, along with references to (accurate) intelligence warnings about the deteriorating security situation in Benghazi leading up to the 9/11/2012 attack on US diplomatic compound in which four Americans were murdered. Nuland’s role provided the closest thing to smoking-gun evidence of a cover up.

Then I assume all of us remember when in January/February of this year on YouTube, there was uploaded an audio recording of a confidential telephone conversation between Nuland and U.S. Ambassador to Ukraine – Jeffrey Payette. Offended by the indecision of European Union leaders in the fight against Moscow’s “evil intentions” in Ukraine, the cheeky high-ranking American did not hesitate to use dirty words towards the European Union (“Fuck the EU”).

Episodes like these draw attention to the type of people who are deciding the destinies of the world – trying to teach others.

And on Friday 11 July 2014 Nuland attended in Dubrovnik the 9th “Croatia Forum” held around issues of EU enlargement into the Western Balkans region. She called for struggle against corruption and for democratic recourse to preserve the values of transatlantic community. She sent a serious message to the corrupt Balkan politicians that the United States know for their corrupt practices and their undemocratic rule.

“Europe can’t be whole when kleptocrats treat states as a bonanza of spoils for themselves and their cronies. And it can’t be free when elections are rigged, independent media is silenced and minorities are vilified. And it can’t be at peace when corrupt officials use political, economic and judicial intimidation to stifle opposition and rip off their own citizens,” Nuland said to the participants of the forum and continued:
“Corruption also threatens national sovereignty because every dirty politician in our midst, every dirty non-transparent contract that we allow, creates another wormhole of vulnerability and an opportunity for mischief by outside forces. From the Balkans to the Baltic to the Black Sea, we must understand, as those on the Maidan did, that corruption is not just a democracy killer, it’s another grey tool in the arsenal of autocrats and kleptocrats who seek to extend their influence, weaken our democracies and enrich themselves at the expense of our citizens”.

Nuland said the gas price dispute, Moscow’s annexation of Crimea and fighting in eastern Ukraine underlined the energy security threat facing Europe. Europe’s energy security needs much work and “building up diverse flow capabilities and capacities and building up deeper networks throughout the continent,” was what was needed. “Croatia has an essential role to play, as an energy security hub for the 21st century… You (Croatia) have spectacular assets to do that so long you as you make smart choices as you are going forward,” Nuland said.

Nuland did not spell out what choices she considers “smart” but given that Croatia is already an EU member perhaps she was using the Croatian platform to address the non-EU members at the forum such as Serbia, Bosnia and Herzegovina, Kosovo, Macedonia, Montenegro, Albania… Perhaps it her address was not about energy security but about gaining anti-Russia support and in doing so all sorts of compromises, scrubbing of war crimes etc., could emerge to fast-track some of these countries into EU membership as a matter of harnessing might for the looming cold war against Russia.

According to Croatian news agency HINA, Russian Deputy Foreign Minister Alexey Meshkov said in Dubrovnik on Saturday 12 July that the European Union should not use Western Balkan countries’ desire of joining the bloc to force them to choose between Europe and Russia.

Swedish Foreign Minister Carl Bildt said for Croatian Radio that Jean-Claude Juncker’s (European Commission President-designate) statement, that there will be no new EU members in next five years, may be true but sends a wrong message because without enlargement, there will be no security and thus the credibility of the EU is at risk, while Serbia’s First Deputy Prime Minister Ivica Dacic said that every EU member state should undergo an assessment every ten years and that he is certain that many would not pass on the criteria test that Serbia is now expected to pass.

Carl Bildt, who was one of the architects of the abysmally failed Dayton agreement for Bosnia and Herzegovina, should truly stay out of this exercise of contemplating EU extension into Western Balkans. He has nothing to offer for any real peaceful solution.

The likelihood that Croatia’s leaders will swallow head-and-shoulders Nuland’s glowing compliments to Croatia as a country that “could become a regional energy hub” is very, very high. The carrot is likely to become even more attractive now that Germany’s Angela Merkel said 15 July in Dubrovnik at a meeting of eight Western Balkans heads of state that her country would support the “region’s” future in the EU.

Croatian current leadership of communist extraction will do everything and anything to intercept and set back any processes dealing with post WWII communist crimes and there are two such cases in German courts at this very moment. One wonders whether justice in these will be compromised for a goal of uniting Western Balkans against Russia. Perhaps Nuland’s “smart choices” include a scenario where Croatia should stop pursuing justice for its own victims of communist crimes and of 1990’s war crimes.

While I completely agree with Nuland on the points of corruption and kleptocrats I find it extremely unsettling that it was she who points to the wrongs of it. If I consider the definition of corruption as a moral impurity or deviation from the ideal then her Benghazy scrub would certainly brush at least some corruption against her character. One wonders how much scrubbing of corrupt individuals’ tracks may occur in the process of making Croatia the energy hub of Europe. One wonders what the price the people will pay if their leaders take up the “offer” to lead the way in that region in a cold war against Russia. The huge numbers of unemployed, hungry and poor are not interested in any cold or hot war; their prime concern is how to bring food to the family table.

Certainly, it would be welcome if Croatia picked up on investments necessary to make it that hub, but I fear the biggest beneficiaries of such an exercise will not the Croatian people or workers. I gladly wait to be proven wrong on this. Ina Vukic, Prof. (Zgb); B.A., M.A.Ps.(Syd)
