There are some days when the world seems to be caught in a never ending tempest of depravity and injustice, when nothing but the irrepressible joy of my young children can counterbalance the dark storm clouds.   However, this week there were a few more sunny patches than usual.

In Texas, after a pigheaded marathon filibuster and a remarkable stand-off between pro-choice activists chanting “hail Satan” and pro-life activists singing ‘Amazing Grace’, the House of Representatives finally passed a bill banning late-term abortion.  It is admittedly, only a small step.  It only bans killing unborn children older than 20 weeks gestation, a mere four weeks advance from the current law, and it will also require abortions to take place in surgical centres, which may save the lives or improve the health of pregnant women but not their doomed children.  It does, however, demonstrate that the truth about abortion is beginning to…

    The epithets “pro choice” and “pro life” are merely marketing euphemisms for Pro or Anti abortion viewpoints. There is no middle ground, there is no compromise to satisfy the views of both sides. I don’t see the changes in Texan law as anything other than part of the ongoing to-ing and fro-ing in the attempt to find that non-existent compromise. I find it difficult to understand those who entrench themselves in either extreme position, it is horrifying to use abortion as an expedient method of contraception but just as unacceptable that a law, mostly based mostly on religious grounds, dictates to women what they can or cannot do with their own body. I do not feel I have the right to dictate to any woman what she must or must not do so I hold a pro abortion position. It doesn’t mean to say I’m comfortable with it. Heads you lose, tails you lose.

    Republicans in the US are not “pro-life” they are “pro-birth”. It seems you have more rights and freedoms in the womb than you do when you get out. How can Texas say its a “pro life” state when it’s executed 500 criminals? How can Republicans/Conservatives be “pro life” when they wish to eliminate or cut budgets for food assistance programs, and universal health care.

    The very brave Wendy Davis simply took a page out of the Republicans playbook and (Rand Paul) and did an epic filibuster.

    Republicans in Texas are scared. As the demographics of the state begin to shift, they realize there is an opportunity for it to fall into Democrat hands.

In 1995, the President of the Republic of Croatia awarded me two Medals of Honor, the Homeland War Memorial Medal and the Order of the Croatian Trefoil for her special merits and her contribution to the founding of the Republic of Croatia.  I have been a successful blogger since 2011 and write extensively in the English-language on issues related to Croatian current affairs and democracy, as well as the challenges Croatia faced and still faces in its transition from communism.
